For reference, the result of this review is a 4.5-star rating for the product. The first thing we took a look at to arrive at this decision is the product’s strengths and weaknesses, based on customer reviews. Features

The 10-inch LUCID gel memory mattress is an upgrade from the previous regular memory foam model, with the obvious difference being the gel infusion. The gel-infusion solves a heat retention issue that existed in the previous model, to some extent, as it helps to regulate temperature while conforming to the body in an attempt to ease pressure points.

The product’s ten inches of depth is made up of 7½ inches of high-density foam at its base, with the remaining 2½ inches going to the memory foam’s comfort layer. The foam density weighs in at three lbs., and the mattress sizes include Twin, Olympic Queen, Full, Full XL, Queen, and King.

It is advertised as a mattress with medium to firm feel, although we have found that this does not apply to everyone. For example, a person of above average weight might not be able to relate to the “medium” feel, and such a person might even find the product too firm for comfort. People of heavier build might even cause lasting indentations into the foam, so if you fall into this category, it might be a good idea to have a look at some other options before you make a decision.

A key feature is the aforementioned CertiPUR-US approval. The purpose of the CertiPUR-US program is to conduct scientific tests on foam mattresses to make sure that they are up to standard. Foams with CertiPUR-US certification are known for low emission and durability, and a major contributor to this fact is that they are not built from ozone-depleting materials such as PBDE flame retardants, CFCs, formaldehyde, and heavy metal. This might be important to consumers that are strongly influenced by the health implications of the product that they want to purchase, and it sets the LUCID 10″ apart from some competitors.

Regarding the 25 year warranty, the manufacturers seem to be a bit coy on the matter, as they fail to present enough details about the conditions in which the warranty becomes functional. The information provided on the product page of the manufacturer only mentions the length of the warranty. Consumers have not been provided with information about actions that may void the warranty, and this may be a deal breaker if you are looking for a product with maximum security in that department.

Durability

The durability of the LUCID gel foam mattress is an important consideration, of course, as you surely do not want to keep changing mattresses every two years. Some customers, in their reviews of the product, have claimed that the product is durable, and they conceived no plans of changing it after four, five years. For a product that has a 25-year warranty that suggests longevity, you get the idea of longevity, and it seems to be something LUCID has successfully achieved here.

Initial Odour

This is a bit of a turn off for us, but it is not uncommon at all among foam mattresses. The initial odor of this particular LUCID mattress is only reported by some customers, and there are a lot of people that do not experience it. The people that did experience it reported that the odor was mild. Simply air it out for a bit after you unpack and before you begin to use the product.

Firmness

On a scale of 1-10, this mattress gets a firmness rating of 7.5. It does feel firm, but the firmness is subject to the weight of the user. If you are of average weight, then it should be great for you, but if you weigh above average, you might find it a little too firm. There is a chance that you might cause lasting indentations in the foam. However, on the average, the level of firmness is great.

Temperature

As suggested earlier, the use of ozone-friendly materials contributes to the fact that this product does not overheat. The gel beads added to the first layer by the manufacturers also contribute to lowering the temperature of the surface of the mattress. It will not cause you to wake up sweaty and hot.

Motion Isolation

The mattress also functions well for non-sleep activities. Its heaviness and the pressure absorbance of the memory foam ensures that it does not make a noise like some other mattresses while you move around on it. The product’s surface is also made to help with motion isolation for ‘active’ sleepers that move around a lot in their sleep. It helps to limit their movement to a minimal level, ensuring that they do not roll off the bed and users with partners can sleep comfortably without getting in the way of each other.

Product Comparison

The LUCID 10-inch is confirmed to be cheaper than most of its competitors, but how do they compare performance/feature-wise? We took a look at three of its competitors and made the comparisons for you. The products we compared with are:

  • Classic Brands 8-inch cool gel
  • The Douglas 10-inch mattress
  • Zinus 10-inch Green Tea mattress

VS Classic Brands 8-inch mattress

In comparison with the Classic Brands 8-inch mattress, the LUCID holds its own very well. Both products come in at similar prices, with a mere $9 the difference between them. This means that the price may not be a major reference point for deciding which should be the better purchase.

However, the first thing we noticed, even before testing any of the two is that the Classic Brands mattress only comes with a 5-year limited warranty, compared to the LUCID’s 25-year warranty, meaning that the LUCID may be a better option for users looking for more security warranty-wise. Both items can be delivered from Amazon within a time frame of 2-10 days (2 days with Amazon Prime).

Out of the box, both products gave off a certain smell, which is normal for box mattresses. However, the LUCID’s smell fades off after a couple of days, while the Classic retained a strong chemical smell for at least 24 hours more.

The LUCID reached its full firmness and height within a couple of hours after unpacking, but the Classic 8-inch took up to five days to complete the process fully. During testing, the LUCID seemed to be firmer and provided more edge support. It also seemed to handle motion transfer better than the Classic 8-inch, this is not to say that the Classic did badly in this department at all, but it could be a decision-maker for “active” sleepers and customers that sleep with partners.

Generally, the LUCID 10-inch is the better mattress, and it costs a bit less too.

LUCID 10-inch VS. Douglas 10-inch Mattress

In comparison with the Douglas mattress, the LUCID does not perform shabbily at all, although the significant difference in price points is a gentle sign of things to come. The Douglas will cause a deeper dent in your wallet, and if you’re working with a small budget, you may decide to overlook the few advantages that it holds over the LUCID. The Douglas has a 15-year warranty compared to the LUCID’s 25 years.

The LUCID is a firmer mattress than the Douglas, but the Elastex material of the foam used in the Douglas makes it not so obvious, as it still feels great. The Douglas felt better on the back than the LUCID foam. The LUCID mattress attained full firmness quicker than the Douglas, but both mattresses expanded to full height at about the same time – within the hour.

One selling point of the Douglas over the LUCID is that it did not emit the odor that is sometimes associated with new foam mattresses. The LUCID did, but it was gone after a few days. It is an advantage but should not be a major deal breaker.

The Douglas mattress is better suited to various sleeping positions than the LUCID, as the support provided by the foam at all angles is more “all-encompassing.” The LUCID is better suited to back and stomach sleepers. The Douglas has a great spine alignment for side sleepers which the LUCID does not have, the LUCID, however, provides better edge support than the Douglas.

Finally, both mattresses deal well with motion transfer, but the Douglas also has a slight edge here. The Douglas costs more than twice the price of the LUCID, and it’s a great foam mattress. However, if you do decide to purchase the LUCID instead, you will be getting great value for your money, and you will not particularly be sacrificing as much quality as the price tag difference may suggest.

LUCID 10-inch vs. Zinus Tea Mattress

The two mattresses come in at a similar price point, with a $20 difference between them. They are both advertised to have medium firmness, but the LUCID feels firmer than the Zinus, although this is not necessarily an advantage and solely depends on your preference. The Zinus does not provide very good edge support, so you are not advised to sit on the edges, and this is something you might call an advantage for the LUCID mattress.

The Zinus mattress also shows slight motion transfer, which might not be ideal for users with sleeping partners. The LUCID mattress, on the other hand, shows minimal motion transfer, meaning you can sleep on it with your partner undisturbed. The LUCID mattress also offers slightly better cooling than the Zinus.

The Zinus comes with a 10-year limited warranty compared to the LUCID’s 25-year warranty, and this is another area where the LUCID mattress wins. Both mattresses are quite similar in features and price, but the LUCID performs better in most tests. This does not suggest that the Zinus is a bad product, and it actually offers the better eco-friendly features of the two, but the LUCID is cheaper, and so it offers better value for money.

This review should help you in making a purchasing decision, but it genuinely seems that you cannot go wrong with the LUCID 10-inch mattress. The decision is yours to make, though. Cheers!
